Why do onions make us cry?

Chopping an onion breaks its cell walls, mixing enzymes with sulfur compounds to form a volatile gas called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When this gas drifts into the moisture of your eyes, it turns into mild sulfuric acid, triggering tear glands to flush out the irritant.
