Why does ice float on water?

Most substances contract and become denser as they solidify, but water behaves abnormally. Below 4°C, hydrogen bonds lock molecules into an open hexagonal crystal lattice that leaves ample empty voids, making ice roughly 9% less dense than the liquid beneath it.
