Why are flamingos pink?

Flamingo chicks hatch with plain grey feathers. Their vivid coral color is derived entirely from consuming brine shrimp and microscopic blue-green algae rich in carotenoid pigments. In the bird's liver, metabolic enzymes convert these pigments into pink and red dye molecules deposited in new plumage.
