Why are bananas curved?

Bananas exhibit negative geotropism: instead of following gravity downward toward the earth, they seek sunlight by growing upward against gravity. Because they sprout in heavy downward clusters, the fruit must bend backward toward the canopy gaps to drink in direct sunlight.
